Microsoft Browser Choice Prompt

This entry was posted by Jon Frowd Software Developer on Monday, 1 March, 2010

Please be aware that a recent Windows update may prompt for a choice of Web Browser when you initially log onto your PC.

We recommend that you do not change browser or update your current version of Internet Explorer on any GP surgery workstations.  To skip this process, when you are initially prompted to select a Browser, close the Window using the “X” at the top right of the Window.

You may still see the following screen, shown below.   Click “X” on this screen as well.

Browser Choice second screen

This will close the windows and allow you to work as normal.  However the next time you reboot your PC you may be prompted for the same thing.  At present it will be necessary to close the window each and every time you are prompted.  We are working on a way to permanently remove the prompt.

You may also notice that a new icon appears on your desktop called ‘Browser Choice’, which you should ignore.

If you have accidently installed a new browser, or need any help or assistance please do call the Service Desk on 01425470888

You say that you do not reccomend updating the version of internet explorer… however ‘Connecting For Health’ have already released a statement a few weeks ago clearly stating that all GP surgeries should be upgrading their browsers from IE6 to IE7 due to the security risks of staying with IE6. They have stated that 7 has now been tested on all applications (Choose & Book etc). The majority of surgeries are still on IE6 from what I can tell, so this advice would seem to have a fairly big gap in it!

  2. David, thanks for raising this question.

Currently, the latest version of Internet Explorer is version 8 – which does not fully support C&B at this time. The Browser Choice prompt offers version 8 of Internet Explorer, not version 7.

We have recommended not to change your version of Internet Explorer to prevent users from accidentally upgrading to version 8. At this time, the supported browsers for C&B are Internet Explorer 6 and 7, and this recommendation follows these guidelines. Our recommendation is a general request to stop users from installing any of the 12 unsupported browsers offered by the Browser Choice prompt.

If you are confident of upgrading IE to version 7 yourself, then please do, however our engineers will be able to perform this upgrade for you if you raise it with our Service Desk team.

  3. Can the Blocker for Browser Choice Prompt not be rolled out via Zenworks?

  4. Kerry,

We are already investigating pushing out the Blocker via ZENworks. We are thoroughly testing this solution before pushing it out.

We will update our advice as soon as we have more information, but to ensure that the Browser Choice Prompt doesn’t appear in the mean time please continue to run the blocker manually. Applying the Blocker twice will not cause further issues.

Please note: This potential solution applies to Hampshire PCT practices only. Practices within all other PCTs covered by Healthcare Computing Support should apply this blocker manually as previously described.

  5. Regarding the ZENworks deployment of this blocker, please see our latest post on this topic at http://www.healthcarecomputing.co.uk/blog/index.php/archive/hampshire-pct-zenworks-deployment/.
